NAMI Eastside Housing: Homeless Initiative

WHAT IS THE HOMELESS SITUATION ON THE EASTSIDE?

On any given night, it is estimated that there are several hundred homeless persons in East King County.

King County has adopted the Continuum of Care for Homeless Persons philosophy which uses outreach, emergency shelters, transitional housing, and permanent housing that are tied to special support services in an effort to help persons with special needs transition from homelessness to independent living. Available shelter and housing resources to support the homeless within East King County are shown below:

In addition to these shelters there are limited voucher programs available through some of the above listed agencies and Eastside Police Departments where emergency shelter is provided on a situation basis for 1 to 3 nights at local hotels and motels.   During the winter months of high vacancy, some of the Eastside motels and hotels will donate rooms for shelter.

Several major concerns exist with respect to housing for homeless persons, namely:

  • Inadequate shelter beds and transitional housing for the homeless population.
  • Inadequate day services, especially for special needs homeless persons.
  • Weak links between transitional housing and shelter programs.
  • Lack of permanent housing for special needs persons transitioning from homelessness especially as provided through the Shelter + Care Program.
  • Uncertainty of Shelter + Care ongoing funding via the McKinney grant process.

WHAT IS NAMI EASTSIDE'S HOMELESS INITIATIVE?

Development of the NAMI Eastside Homeless Initiative is in progress.

A Group Home located on the Eastside and established by a NAMI Eastside member will start operations as transitional housing for several homeless persons with mental illness this summer. Community Psychiatric Clinic will provide both housing and mental health support services.
