NAMI Eastside Housing Program Overview On October 21, 2003, the NAMI Eastside monthly forum topic was"Housing for Mentally Ill and Homeless Persons Living On the Eastside - An Overview of Need, Available Programs, and Means of Access." Contact housing@nami-eastside.org for more information about this program. WHAT IS THE HOUSING SITUATION FOR MENTALLY ILL AND HOMELESS PERSONS LIVING ON THE EASTSIDE? It is estimated that there are several thousands persons with serious mental illnesses and several hundreds of homeless persons living in East King County. These persons (Consumers) are typically in the low income strata of our society and cannot afford the market rental rates in East King County. At the same time, the supply of affordable rental housing for low income persons and shelters for homeless persons in East King County is very limited and is greatly exceeded by the demand for such housing. This situation, combined with the complexities involved in qualifying for, seeking, and obtaining appropriate housing, has resulted in a housing crisis situation for many Consumers living in East King County. WHAT IS NAMI EASTSIDE'S HOUSING MISSION? The NAMI Eastside Housing Program will strive to help increase the availability and improve the quality of housing and related services (to be referred to as Housing) in East King County for Consumers with mental disorders, including those who are homeless. In addition, the NAMI Eastside Housing Program will strive to be a reliable source of information and assistance to Consumers (and their support persons) regarding their special needs Housing in East King County.
