NAMI Eastside 2007 Accomplishments

The following summarize key NAMI Eastside programs, services, and accomplishments during 2007:

EEDUCATION

  • Family-To-Family Education: In-depth instruction using NAMI’s nationally recognized 12-week curriculum is offered to classes for parents, siblings and friends. One 12-week session was provided to 23 individuals in 2004 and there is a waiting list for sessions in Year 2005. Three new team mentors were trained in 2004.

  • Peer-to-Peer Education: NAMI’s 9-week curriculum is offered to individuals recovering from serious mental illnesses. Training of new mentors is planned for 2008.

  • Visions for Tomorrow: In-depth instruction using NAMI’s nationally recognized 12-week curriculum is offered to classes for parents of children with serious mental illnesses.  Three VFT team mentors were trained in the spring of 2007.  One session was held in the fall of 2007 and another class will be held in the spring of 2008.

  • P.A.V.E. Workshops and I.E.P ADVOCACY (Parents are Vital in Education and Individual Education Plan). NAMI Eastside held two P.A.V.E. trainings in 2004.

  • In Our Own Voice: In 2007, NAMI Eastside hosted NAMI WA’s IOOV training where over 15 individuals with serious mental illnesses were trained to make presentations to schools, faith communities, companies, and other civic and community groups. NAMI Eastside’s IOOV team has grown to 16. Presentations were made to over 525 individuals in 2006!

  • Educating the Next Generation: NAMI Eastside initiated this exciting program, which was expanded and is now shared with all four NAMI Affiliates in King County. Educating the Next Generation is designed to provide high school or college classes with one to five classes on Mental Illnesses and is often teamed with a follow-up by an In Our Own Voice, Living with Mental Illness team presentation. NAMI Eastside team members trained over ??? individuals in 2006.

  • NAMI Facilitator Training: Training will be offered in March 2008.  NAMI national’s in-depth Facilitator Training will increase our base of trained Co-facilitator’s for our many Support Groups.  If you are interested in attending please contact the NAMI-eastside office..

  • Children’s Conference: NAMI Eastside hosted an Aspergers Syndrome & Childhood Anxiety Disorders Conference with over 65 in attendance.

  • Monthly Educational Forums: Experts share knowledge on a broad range of mental health topics to well-attended sessions conducted monthly at Evergreen Hospital at no charge to the public.

SUPPORT

  • Monthly Support Groups for Consumers: NAMI-C.A.R.E. (Consumers Advocating Recovery through Empowerment) Program provides peer support for persons living with mental illnesses. We have a Mental Health & Spirituality Support Group and a Depression Support Group.

  • Monthly Support Groups for Families: Two support groups meet at Eastside locations where care and helpful information are provided for families and friends of the mentally ill and parents of young children who are affected by a mental illness.

  • Spanish Family & Consumer Peer Support Group: NAMI Eastside has added a support group for individuals who speak Spanish and are affected by a serious mental illness.

  • NAMI Eastside Social & Recreational Activities: NAMI Eastside’s Consumers can attend a Consumer Art Practice/Worship.

  • I.E.P ADVOCACY Assistance provided to parents on Individual Education Plans.

  • NAMI Eastside Advocacy: Participation on the following Boards & Task Forces: Eastside Interfaith Social Concerns Council, A Regional Coalition For Housing (ARCH).  Additionally, NAMI Eastside has established and expanded our relationships with mental health providers on the eastside and policy makers including King County Providers/RSN (Regional Service Network or the public mental health system), Eastside City and County Council Members, State Representatives and Senators.

  • NAMI Eastside News: Timely articles and announcements relevant to advocating improvement in the quality of life of persons with serious mental illness appear every quarter. Approximately 1600 issues were distributed each quarter on the Eastside and across the State in to date in 2007.

  • HERO House, an Eastside Clubhouse for Psychiatric Rehabilitation, has been functioning for two years.  The Clubhouse is an ICCD (International Center for Clubhouse Development) model that is a place where people (members) recovering from mental illnesses come for encouragement and support.

OTHER

  • NAMI Eastside Referral Service & Office: NAMI Eastside’s office is open Monday to Friday from 10:00 AM to 3:00 PM during the week to assist individuals and families who seek knowledge and support for themselves or a loved one.

  • NAMI Eastside Book & Video Library: NAMI Eastside has an extensive library of materials related to mental illnesses, medication and tools to utilize for recovery.

  • Websites: The www.nami-eastside.org website continues to excel and had over 3,500 “visits” per month this past year (2007) .
