Eastside 2004 Accomplishments
The following summarize key NAMI Eastside
programs, services, and accomplishments during 2004:
EDUCATION
Family-To-Family Education: In-depth instruction using NAMI’s
nationally recognized 12-week curriculum is offered to classes for parents,
siblings and friends. One 12-week session was provided to 23 individuals
in 2004 and there is a waiting list for sessions in Year 2005. Three
new team mentors were trained in 2004.

Peer-to-Peer Education: NAMI’s 9-week curriculum
is offered to individuals recovering from serious mental illnesses.
Three new team mentors were trained and sessions were provided in
2004 to 8 individuals and there is a growing wait-list for sessions
in Year 2005.

Visions for Tomorrow: In-depth instruction using
NAMI’s nationally recognized 12-week curriculum is offered to
classes for parents of children with serious mental illnesses. Two
new team mentors were trained and sessions were provided in 2004 to
15 individuals -- there is a waiting list for sessions in Year 2005.

P.A.V.E. Workshops and I.E.P ADVOCACY (Parents
are Vital in Education and Individual Education Plan). NAMI Eastside
held two P.A.V.E. trainings in 2004.

In Our Own Voice: NAMI Eastside hosted NAMI WA’s
IOOV training where over 10 individuals with serious mental illnesses
were trained to make presentations to schools, faith communities,
companies, and other civic and community groups. NAMI Eastside’s
IOOV team has grown to 16. Presentations were made to over 500 individuals
in 2004 – twice as many as in 2003!

Educating the Next Generation: NAMI Eastside
initiated this exciting program, which was expanded and is now shared
with all four NAMI Affiliates in King County. Educating the Next Generation
is designed to provide high school or college classes with one to
five classes on Mental Illnesses and is often teamed with a follow-up
by an In Our Own Voice, Living with Mental Illness team presentation.
NAMI Eastside has over 9 team members trained and has already taught
17 classes for over 500 individuals.

NAMI Facilitator Training: In 2004 NAMI Eastside
had 19 individuals take NAMI national’s in-depth Facilitator
Training to increase our base of trained Co-facilitator’s for
our many Support Groups.

Children’s Conference: NAMI Eastside hosted
an Aspergers Syndrome & Childhood Anxiety Disorders Conference
with over 65 in attendance.

Monthly Forums: Experts share knowledge on a
broad range of mental health topics to well-attended sessions conducted
monthly at no charge to the public.
SUPPORT
-
Spanish Family & Consumer Peer Support Group:
NAMI Eastside has added a support group for individuals who speak
Spanish and are affected by a serious mental illness.

Expanded Monthly Support Groups: Support groups
meet at several Eastside locations where care and helpful information
are provided for families and friends of the mentally ill with special
support groups for siblings and adult children, and parents of young
children who are affected by a mental illness.

Expanded Monthly Support Groups for Consumers:
NAMI-C.A.R.E. (Consumers Advocating Recovery through Empowerment)
Program provides peer support for persons living with mental illnesses.
In 2004 we have added additional support groups for individuals with
Depression. We have teamed with the Gulf War Resource Center and has
a set of Post Traumatic Stress Disorder Peer Support Groups. We have
added two sets of Mental Health & Spirituality Support Groups
– one which meets during the day and another set in the evening.

NAMI Eastside Social & Recreational Activities:
NAMI Eastside’s Consumers received a Grant from the King County
RSN for Art Workshops and Trainings. In honor of Mental Health Week
consumers had the first NAMI Eastside Art Exhibit at the City of Redmond
during the month of October. Consumers, family and friends attended
the annual NAMI Eastside picnic, monthly bowling, local sports and
musical events.

I.E.P ADVOCACY Assistance provided to parents
on Individual Education Plans.

NAMI Eastside Advocacy: Participation on the
following Boards & Task Forces: King County Mental Health Advisory
Board, King County Quality Council, King County ‘s Citizens
Advisory Commission on Homelessness Encampments, Eastside Interfaith
Social Concerns Council, Parents are Vital in Education, A Regional
Coalition For Housing (ARCH), The Parity Coalition and WA Partners
In Crisis. Additionally, NAMI Eastside has established and expanded
our relationships with mental health providers on the eastside and
policy makers including King County Providers/RSN (Regional Service
Network or the public mental health system), Eastside City and County
Council Members, State Representatives and Senators.

NAMI Eastside News: Timely articles and announcements
relevant to advocating improvement in the quality of life of persons
with serious mental illness appear every other month. Approximately
1200 issues were distributed on the Eastside and across the State,
bimonthly in 2004.

Housing Initiatives: NAMI Eastside is acting
as a “catalyst” in improving the availability of affordable
housing and outreach to the mentally ill and homeless on the Eastside.
During 2003, a member owned group home for homeless women (Courage
House) was opened for occupancy in cooperation with Community Psychiatric
Clinic. The Accessory Dwelling Unit (ADU) Demonstration Housing Program
was promoted with the objective of providing an affordable housing
option for low-income persons affected by mental illness and has been
awarded received funding to seed the program.

Eastside Clubhouse for Psychiatric Rehabilitation
Initiative: An initiative to establish an Eastside Clubhouse for Psychiatric
Rehabilitation, which will offer a work oriented and social related
program and environment to persons with serious mental illness, was
launched in September 2003. Several prominent Founding Patrons have
contributed financial support to develop and implement this initiative.

Social & Recreational Initiatives: An initiative
to kick off an activity in a core area in Bellevue that would provide
social, recreational, educational and support opportunities for individuals
of all ages with mental illnesses.
OTHER

NAMI Eastside Referral Service & Office:
NAMI Eastside’s office is open several days during the week
to assist individuals and families seek knowledge and support for
themselves or a loved one.

NAMI Eastside Book & Video Library: NAMI
Eastside has an extensive library of materials related to mental illnesses,
medication and tools to utilize for recovery.
-
Websites: The www.nami-eastside.org and www.namieastbp.org,
websites continue to excel and had over 3,500 “visits”
per month this past year.
